England: Attentate als Vorwand für systematisches und umfassendes E-Mail-Screening?
Dass die Attentate von London als Vorwand dienen würden, allerlei weitreichende Eingriffe in die Bürgerrechte vorzunehmen, war keine Überraschung. Als der Bundesrat der Einführung von Pässen mit biometrischen Daten zustimmte, suggerierte Schily, solche Pässe hätten möglicherweise die Anschläge von London erschweren können. Der britische Innenminister Charles Clark will nun auf europäischer Ebene mit seinen Kollegen diskutieren, in großem Umfang Telefonate und emails zu speichern und zu analysieren, selbstverständlich alles im Kampf gegen den Terror. Das berichtet der Guardian. He raised the stakes dramatically by claiming they [email-Überwachungs-Maßnahmen, marlowe] could 'quite possibly' have helped prevent such attacks, by identifying in advance suspicious patterns of behaviour by potential terrorists. The move comes as The Observer can also reveal that the National Crime Squad has contacted internet service providers in the UK, appealing for them to preserve email messages in case they prove useful to the manhunt. The messages could include highly personal information Gleichzeitig gibt er allerdings auch zu: ...he cannot claim that ID cards would have prevented the bombing.
Wir dürfen wohl auch in Deutschland mit weiteren Einschränkungen der Bürgerrechte rechnen. Davon geht auch Prantl in seinem heutigen Kommentar in der Süddeutschen aus: Und so nutzt auch er [Schily] den Londoner Anschlag, um ein Sicherheitspaket Nummer drei vorzustellen ? ein Kompendium all dessen, was in den ersten zwei Sicherheitspaketen nach dem Anschlag vom 11. September 2001 keinen Platz fand; unter anderem soll die Polizei zu noch mehr Grundrechtseingriffen berechtigt sein. (Süddeutsche Zeitung, 11.7.2005)
Dabei wurden seit dem 11. September die Grundrechte in Deutschland schon in kaum vertretbarer Weise eingeschränkt, stellt Prantl fest: Strafrecht, Polizei- und das Ausländerrecht haben in den vergangenen Jahren eine Umgestaltung größten Ausmaßes erfahren. Die Sicherheitspakete der Jahre 2001/2002 sind an und über die Grenzen rechtsstaatlichen Sicherheitsrechts gegangen.

Asia Times über verdeckte Aktivitäten der USA im Iran
Hier ein paar Auszüge aus:

Like the color-coded terror alert system, the technicolor "velvet invasions" blink a warning. Despite receiving an ugly bruise in Uzbekistan, the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)and its non-governmental organization (NGO) regime-change industry hope to stage another cardboard coup in Iran. But it could be a black and blue revolution.
Citing a "mission accomplished" in Iraq, President George W Bush told 25,000 soldiers in Fort Hood, Texas: "The establishment of a free Iraq is a watershed event in the global democratic revolution. That success is sending a message from Beirut to Tehran."
Tasked by the Bush administration with sending that message from America to Tehran, and "winning hearts and minds" is author and "Swiftboat Veterans for Truth" member Jerome Corsi. On May 16, Corsi's NGO, the Iran Freedom Foundation (IFF), inaugurated a 12-day "Iran Freedom Walk" from Philadelphia's Liberty Bell to Washington, DC....
It was an accurate projection. In a May 5 Financial Times article, "US offers grants to help oppose clerics", Guy Dinmore reported that lawmakers demanded a bill aimed at overthrowing the Iranian government be increased to $50 million. This did not include the millions of dollars provided by the State Department's Middle East Partnership Initiative. "We have turned opposition into a profession," commented Ray Takeyh of the Council on Foreign Relations. "This money is going to go up."
Such "soft power" opposition activities are escalating. The May 29 New York Times quoted Nicholas Burns, under secretary of state for political affairs, as saying the Bush team was "taking a page from the playbook" of colored revolutions where US-funded pro-democracy NGOs helped nonviolently overthrow noncompliant governments.

Guter Artikel und kritischer im Guardian über Live 8
Zu Live 8 gibt es einen lesenswerten Artikel im Guardian.
Er hinterfragt die für die Unternehmen und G8-Politiker so erfreuliche These, dass Geschäftsinteressen und die Bekämpfung der Armut kein Widerspruch und die internationalen Konzerne nicht Ursache, sondern Lösung von Problemen seien. Wie ist denn z.B. das geschäftsfördernde Konzept von der Privatisierung der Wasserversorgung geeignet, die Nöte der Afrikaner zu lindern? Man kann wohl sagen, dass hier eine legitime Idee, die der Bekämpfung der Armut und der Erzeugung von öffentlichem Interesse an Afrika, von ein paar cleveren Marektingstrategen vereinnahmt wurde.
The G8 leaders have seized this opportunity with both hands. Multinational corporations, they argue, are not the cause of Africa's problems but the solution. ...
They have already been given control of the primary instrument of US policy towards Africa, the African Growth and Opportunity Act. The act is a fascinating compound of professed philanthropy and raw self-interest. To become eligible for help, African countries must bring about "a market-based economy that protects private property rights", "the elimination of barriers to United States trade and investment" and a conducive environment for US "foreign policy interests". In return they will be allowed "preferential treatment" for some of their products in US markets.
The important word is "some". Clothing factories in Africa will be allowed to sell their products to the US as long as they use "fabrics wholly formed and cut in the United States" or if they avoid direct competition with US products. The act, treading carefully around the toes of US manufacturing interests, is comically specific. ... The act instructs the US Agency for International Development to develop "a receptive environment for trade and investment". What is more interesting is that its implementation has been outsourced to the Corporate Council on Africa.
The CCA is the lobby group representing the big US corporations with interests in Africa: Halliburton, Exxon Mobil, Coca-Cola, General Motors, Starbucks, Raytheon, Microsoft, Boeing, Cargill, Citigroup and others. For the CCA, what is good for General Motors is good for Africa....

MBNA: Hacker-Angriff, Hubschrauber-Absturz und Übernahme innerhalb von nur 12 Tagen
Die Kreditkartenfirma MBNA muss das Gefühl haben, ein Fluch laste auf ihr. Innerhalb von nur zwei Wochen gewinnen "Hacker" Zugang zu 40 Mio. Kreditkartendaten, darunter möglicherweise auch zu Daten von MBNA, stürzen 6 ihrer Top-Manager mit ihrem Hubschrauber kurz nach dem Start bei NY in den East River und werden gerettet (erstaunlicherweise war nur wenige Tage zuvor ebenfalls ein Hubschrauber in den East River gestürzt; durchschnittlich gibt es in NY jährlich 4 Abstürze), und nun kauft die Bank of America das Unternehmen. Dabei sollen 6.000 Stellen wegfallen.
Man könnte fast auf die Idee kommen, das seien etwas zu viele seltene Zufallsereignisse in so kurzer Zeit.
MBNA ist seit kurzer Zeit Arbeitgeber des ehemaligen FBI-Chefs, Louis J. Freeh. Er hat in seiner Karriere schon einige merkwürdige Sachen untersucht, sei es der TWA-800-Crash vor NY oder den Spionage-Fall Robert Hanssen.
Die "Revolving Door" zwischen Banken und Ermittlungsbehörden in den USA dreht sich übrigens schneller, als man bei diesen sehr unterschiedlichen Tätigkeitsfeldern denken mag. CIA Executive Director "Buzzy" Krongard war z.B. vor seiner CIA-Zeit bei der Investment Bank A.B. Brown beschäfitg (heute Deutsche Bank).

Neues Blog: Know your Bush Family Evil Empire (BFEE)
Wer gelegentlich das amerikanische Diskussionforum Democratic Underground besucht, kennt vielleicht den Begriff BFEE: Er steht in dem dort verwendeten Jargon für "Bush Family Evil Empire".
Ein poster dort, Octafish, recherchiert hin und wieder die finsteren Seiten der Bush-Dynastie der letzten 60 Jahre und veröffentlicht seine Recherchen unter der Überschrift "Know your BFEE". Inzwischen hat er für seine Posts ein Blog angelegt: Know Your BFEE. Es hat, laut Untertitel, folgende Motivation: The name Bush passes through America's secret history, laboring in the service of a fascistic and satanic secret ruling elite. Not even Ian Fleming dared dream an archvillain capable of hijacking America's government. This site aims to chronicle some of their depravations, criminality and treason.

VENTURE capitalists will raise a record ?46bn (£30.88bn) of funding this year to strike a wave of giant takeover deals in Europe.
American behemoths Carlyle and Blackstone have already gathered new multibillion European funds while many more are currently out on the road getting backing.
Meanwhile, London-based rivals like CVC, BC Partners and Apax are also boosting their financial firepower.
The sheer amount of cash being raised will mean venture capitalists can bid for ever-larger companies. If the forecasts are correct, the market will see a vast increase on the ?28bn raised last year. The amount is fuelled by the growing number of ?1bn-plus funds aimed at doing FTSE 100-sized company buyouts.

Lebenszeichen vom BCCI-Prozess
Seit geraumer Zeit läuft in London ein Prozess gegen die Bank of England in Sachen BBCI, angestrengt für die Gläubiger der Bank BCCI durch den Insolvenzverwalter, Deloitte. Wie der Guardian am 11.1.2004 schreibt: It has been a long road to Court 73. The BCCI mega-trial, which opens on Tuesday in London, is the culmination of more than a decade of delays, pre-trial hearings and legal tussles over secret documents. Successive Governments have fought tooth and nail to prevent this case making it to the High Court. Now it is upon them, and no less a party than the Bank of England is in the dock.
Nun wurde in dem Mammut-Prozess der erste Zeuge gehört, nachdem die Verteidigung in ihrer Eröffnungserklärung über 119 Tage "the longest speech in legal history" (Independent, 13.6.2005) gehalten hat: Lord Callaghan of Cardiff, the former Prime Minister, repeatedly warned the Bank of England about problems at the Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI), the High Court heard yesterday. Brian Quinn, head of banking supervision at the Bank in the 1980s, told the court of meetings with the former Prime Minister, who was an adviser to BCCI's founder, Agha Hasan Abedi.
Mr Quinn is the first witness to be called in the marathon trial in which the BCCI's liquidators are suing the Bank of England for £850 million in damages. He denied misleading Lord Justice Bingham's official inquiry into BCCI, saying: "The idea that I or anyone else would deliberately deceive is totally inconsistent with the culture of the Bank. It's not part of my character to lie or deceive."
The Bank of England is accused of failing in its supervisory duties towards BCCI, which was shut down in 1991 with losses of £9 billion. Incorporated in Luxembourg, BCCI had its headquarters in London and had thousands of depositors in Britain. (Independent, 14.6.2005)

Den gesamten von Senator John F. Kerry verantworteten Bericht, der auf der FAS-Site kapitelweise abrufbar ist, habe ich in zwei pdf-Dokumente kopiert.
Ob er die genauere Lektüre verdient, weiss ich nicht genau. Wahrscheinlich erfährt man mehr aus dem Buch von Jonathan Beaty und S.C. Gwynne (The Outlaw Bank : A Wild Ride into the Secret Heart of BCCI, Random House, 1993): Demnach verfolgte BCCI eine Reihe von Aktivitäten, die nicht unter das klassische Bankgeschäft fallen. Beispielsweise hat BCCI gleichzeitig die Operationen des Mossads in Panama finanziert und sich um die Geschäfte der Drogenbarone gekümmert (S. 79). BCCI makelte die meisten Waffendeals mit arabischen Staaten (S. 53).
Selbstverständlich sind diese klandestinen Dienstleistungen nicht auf den Mossad beschränkt, auch die CIA macht intensiv von ihnen Gebrauch. So wurden im Auftrag der USA saudi-arabische Gelder durch BCCI an die Contras in Nicaragua übermittelt (S. 97). BCCI stellte sogar Bargeld in großen Mengen zur Finanzierung verdeckter Operationen der CIA bereit (S. 232-233, 301). Eine entscheidende Rolle spielte BCCI in Pakistan, dessen nukleare Aufrüstung ohne BCCI nicht denkbar gewesen wäre. Die Autoren schreiben: Pakistan would soon appear to be a subsidiary of BCCI. In einem ihrer Time-Artikel ziehen sie denn auch das Fazit: BCCI is a vast, stateless, multinational corporation that deploys its own intelligence agency, complete with a paramilitary wing and enforcement units [hier darf man sich enforcement ruhig auch physisch vorstellen], known collectively as black networks" (S. 271).
Mit der Bezeichnung "Bank" wird das gesamte Spektrum der von BCCI angebotenen Dienstleistungen also nur unzureichend erfasst. Auch die meisten Zeitungsberichte unterschlagen viel von den spannenderen Details, und der deutsche Zeitungsleser erfährt gar nichts. Dabei war einer der wichtigsten Informanten der beiden Time-Autoren ausgerechnet ein deutscher Waffenhändler mit dem Codenamen Heinrich...
